Federeal environment Minister approves Channel Deepenig Project.
In one of his first major decisions since coming to office, Federal environment minister Peter Garrett today gave approval to the Port of Melbourne Corporation's controversial plan to deepening parts of Melbourne's existing shipping channel through Port Phillip Bay. Hoever, in addition to the existing monitoring requirements, Garrett has imposed 16 additional restrictions on the project. The Blue Wedges coalition remains vehemently opposed to the project claiming that it will cause irreparable damage to the fragile ecosystem and that the Port of Melbourne Corporation will in fact excavate more material than what was originally proposed.
